Sri Lankan team for World Veterans Age Group TT C'ships

Two season campaigners Mohamed Laffeer a former Sri Lanka player and national selector and Namal Gunasekera of Lake House Sports Club will captain the men's and women's team respectively for the 12th World veterans age group table tennis championships which will be held from May 30 to June 6 in Yokohama, Japan.

Laffeer will compete in the men's 50-59 age group category events. He is also the President of the Veterans Table Tennis Association having earlier participated in the International veterans table tennis open championships in China.

Sarath Wijesooriya of National Savings Bank will also compete in the men's 50-59 age group events. He had earlier represented the country at the 11th World Veterans Table Tennis championships held in Switzerland and at the Masters Games in Australia 2002.

Upali Ranjith will also participate in the 50-59 age group events. He had earlier represented Sri Lanka at the inaugural Asian veterans table tennis tournament held in Australia in 1997. S. S. de Silva a former Sri Lanka ranked player will also participate in the 50-59 age group category events.

He is an experienced player having participated in the previous World veterans table tennis tournament in Switzerland, World Masters Games in Australia and at the Chinese veterans open table tennis championships last year.

The President of the Sri Lanka Table Tennis Association SP Daya Samaraweera is another player who will compete in the 50-59 age group category events.

Samaraweera has toured Maldives, Pakistan, Germany, China and India as an official of the Sri Lanka table tennis teams and as a veterans player. In the men's squad there will be eight players who will compete in the 40-49 age group category events.

Former Sri Lanka cap and national selector Rajiva Wijetunge of Ceylinco Shriram Capital Management Services Limited is an experienced player having captained the Sri Lanka veterans table tennis team to Germany in 2002.

Waruna Gunawardena of National Savings Bank will be competing in his third major international table tennis tournament having represented the country at the previous World veterans table tennis tournament in Switzerland and at the World Masters Games held in Australia 2002.

G. Weerakkody will also compete in the 40-49 age group category events in addition to his duties as the Team Leader. H. Gamage will also join the line up having toured Switzerland for the previous World veterans table tennis tournament in 2002 and Thailand for the Friendship Cup tournament last year.

Athula Ratnaweera of Mobitel also had the honour of participating in the previous World veterans table tennis tournament held in Switzerland.

D. M. Bandula had the honour of participating at the World Masters championships in Australia in 2003 and toured China with the Sri Lanka veterans table tennis team last year. Jayasiri Ittapana of Print Care Group also has previous international experience having toured Germany and China with the Sri Lanka veterans table tennis team in 2002 and 2003 respectively.

Kiron Shenoy of Pan Asia Group is another player who will compete in the 40-49 age group category events. In addition former national captain G. N. Lucas will compete in the 60-64 age group category events while Robert Joseph of Old Bens SC will participate in the 65-69 age group category events.

Meanwhile Namal Gunasekera of Lake House SC a former South Asian Federation Games silver medallist will lead the women's team. She has previous experience of having participated in the World championships in Sweden (1985) and China (1993), Commonwealth championships in Singapore (1995) and India (2001). She will be joined by Dayawathie Peiris, Pushpakanthi Dhammika and Ama Suraweera of Rupavahini Corporation.
