Seven committees to ensure public security, curb crime

by Asanga Warnakulasuriya

Seven committees comprising secretaries from 26 Government Departments were appointed yesterday to ensure public security and curb the increasing crime rate both at the national and departmental level.

"The committees appointed on the directives of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga will look into the threats to public security and suggest measures to be taken at Department level to minimise it", Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security Law and Order Ranaviraja said.

Briefing the media at the Ministry yesterday, he said the Seven committees would look into the causes of increasing traffic accidents, illicit liquor booths, dealers, importing and distributing of dangerous drugs, organised crime, rape and child abuse, illegal weapons, and bribery and corruption.

Once the Ministry receives the committee reports, steps would be taken to draw up a strategic plan to combat crime, Ranaviraja said. He said the Ministry hopes to have these reports by the end of June.

Following the recommendations the Ministry would bring necessary amendments to add more teeth to current laws to deal specially with road accidents and illegal weapons, he added.

He was of the view that the Police could not single handedly fight against crime but collective efforts from ministerial officials would greatly enhance chances of bringing down the crime rate.

Deputy Minister Jayaratne Herath stressed the need of such collective effort to ensure the maintaining of law and order in the country.

Ven. Dr. Medagoda Sumantissa observed that the lack of self-discipline in the youth of today as the cause of many evils and said that self-discipline plays a vital role in preventing violence among the community.
