News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | JVP - EPDP talks cordial The leadership of the JVP and the EPDP, met in Colombo on May 20 and had a cordial discussion about the current political situation in the country. An EPDP release said the discussions mainly focused on the stand the two parties should take during the future peace talks. The two parties agreed that they should pressurise all parties concerned to restart negotiations immediately for funding a lasting solution to the ethnic problem. The two parties vehemently rejected the concept of 'sole representatives of the Tamil people' put forward by the LTTE as it would not only violate democracy, pluralism and human rights of the Tamil people but also lead to the setting up of a dictatorial facist regime in the North and East. The two parties also agreed that they should educate the people about this matter through a joint propaganda drive which would also present their poverty stands about the LTTE's ISGA proposals. The need to build a close link between the Ministries held by the JVP and the EPDP to maximise their service to the people under the government's 'Rata Perata' program also gained their attention at the talks. The JVP delegation at the talks led by party leader Somawansa Amarasinghe comprised General Secretary Tylvin Silva, and Propaganda Secretary' Wimal Weerawansa while the EPDP was represented by party General Secretary and Agricultural Marketing Department, Hindu Affairs and Tamil Language Schools and Vocational Training (North) Minister Douglas Devananda, S. Sivadasan, S. Thavaraja, Dr. K. Vigneswaran, Ms. Maheswari Velayudam and Nelson S. Edirisinghe. |
