by Florence Wickramage The Head Office Flying Squad of the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWLC) has conducted over 50 raids during the year 2003 to April 2004 bringing to the department a revenue of over Rs. 200,000 through fines imposed on defaulters, Director General DWLC Dayananda Kariyawasam told the Daily News yesterday. These offences contravened of the provisions of the Flora and Fauna Protection Ordinance. Items seized by Flying squad officers included game meat, protected animal parts such as skulls, antlers, Deer and Leopard skins, Leopard head etc. Several of the offences were of personal possession of protected animals such as Star Tortoise, Deer, Crocodile etc. the Flying Squad also took into custody a consignment of allegedly imported Butterfly species from a Shopping Mall in the Colombo city. The raids were conducted by former Ranger M. Faiz and Ranger W.A.A.D.U. Indrajith.
