No more booze in public

Police has been advised to take strong action against groups of people consuming liquor in unauthorised public places like roadsides, parks etc.

Tilak Ranaviraja, Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security, Law and Order has written to the Inspector General of Police Indra de Silva asking him to take immediate action to instruct officials to prevent consumption of liquor in public places by groups of people.

In a communication to the IGP, Ranaviraja states: "I have received complaints that people assemble on the roadsides in groups and consume liquor in public places in the evenings on week days and on public holidays. I have also witnessed these scenes especially while travelling on the ceremonial road to Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte.

"I presume, consumption of liquor in public places in unacceptable and socially harmful. This is certainly bound to create a bad impression on the Sri Lankan society. Please look into this matter and take immediate action to instruct the relevant officials to prevent this harmful and antisocial behaviour."

He has also asked the IGP to look into whether there are any legal implications which will stand in the way of such action being taken and the proposed remedial action.
