Returning to the fold

by Shane Bayley - Secretary, Old Antonian Social Club, Australia

In March this year a large group of old boys who studied at St Anthony's College, Kandy, travelled from all parts of Australia to their beautiful motherland for the 150th Jubilee Celebrations of their beloved Alma Mater.

It was an honour to be present at this wonderful occasion, meeting fellow Antonians from all over Sri Lanka and the world.

The Anniversary Day of the 12th of March unfolded as a magnificent Kandy day. Like prodigal sons, our group entered the hallowed grounds of our old school, to see it in great splendour.

Thanks to the current principal, staff, students, parents and old boys and well-wishers of the College who did an excellent job of presenting the school at its best for its sesquicentennial.

During the day, we enjoyed the multi-religious ceremonies, a traditional breakfast, cultural displays, marching bands, speeches by the dignitaries and the opening of the College Museum.

The large crowd of staff, students and their families, old boys, well-wishers and dignitaries were a testament to the rich history and multi- cultural values of St Anthony's.

Meeting up with our old schoolmates brought back many memories of our school days. Stories were shared, friendships were rekindled and laughter could be heard through the halls of the St Anthony's for the following two weeks.

Among the events included in the festivities were a Gala Dinner, Dinner Dance, Trinity Antonian Big Match, Stag Night, Ex-boarders Night & Cricket Match and Excellence Awards.

A great deal of effort and expense by our brother old boys went into making these events a grand success.

The Excellence Awards brought pride to those who received awards, as well as those attending, due to the large number of Antonians who have achieved honours in all spheres of life, all over the world.

Another stock of heartfelt memories are now stored away in the minds of those who came. Enough to last until the next time we return to the fold; to the place that taught us our manhood, culture, thought patterns, behaviour and the virtues of strength, dignity, determination, courage, patience and most of all humility.

We wish our dear Alma Mater further successes in the coming years. May you be blessed with all you need to continue producing great but humble Sri Lankans.

Thank you to all those who helped make this celebration the time of our lives. We look forward to coming back again to our beloved motherland - Sri Lanka and to our great school - St Anthony's.
