Uva Paranagama vegetables in Green Houses for export The Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) commenced work on the Uva Paranagama Export Production Village recently at Ambagasdowa. The EPV was set up by the EDB to cultivate vegetables in green houses for export. Under this project six hundred farmers are involved in cultivating vegetables. The Sri Lanka Export Development Board with the Ministry of Rural Economy invested Rs. 100 million under the Indian Credit Line to import green houses from India. The first consignment of 100 green houses were distributed among farmers at Ambagasdowa. Under the scheme a green house valued at Rs. 157,000 and Rs. 50,000 for preparation of land purchasing seeds, and training at the Bindunuwewa Agriculture Training Centre has been provided to farmers. The scheme operates in 68 Grama Seva Divisions in the Uva Paranagama Divisional Secretariat Division. Tomatoes, capsicum, beans, brinjals, lettuce, bell pepper and cucumber will be grown for exports. According to M. Z. M. Farhad, Deputy Director, Export Agriculture Division, Sri Lanka Export Development Board several export companies have already agreed to purchase produce from the new EPV. Produce will be exported to the Maldives and the Middle East. At present earnings from vegetable exports are around 1% to 2% of the total export income. It is estimated that exports from Uva Paranagama EPV will be around 1,500 metric tons for a season bringing in an additional foreign exchange income of Rs. 30 million. |
