Exports of coconut products up 45% in two months to Rs. 2,733 million

Export earnings from coconut and coconut based products, during the first two months in 2004 increased by 45 per cent to Rs. 2,733 million from Rs. 1,891 million outperforming the 6 per cent growth recorded in the corresponding period in 2003, according to the latest statistics of the Coconut Development Authority.

Exports of Kernel products (Desiccated coconut, Coconut oil, Copra, Fresh coconut, Coconut milk and Milk powder) during the period Jan. - Feb. 2004 had increased by 71 per cent to Rs. 1,319 million from Rs. 770 million in 2003.

Export earnings from Non-Kernel products during the period Jan. - Feb. 2004 increased by 26 per cent to Rs. 1,413 million from Rs. 1,120 million during the corresponding period in 2003.

Fibre products export made a significant contribution for 18 per cent of this growth. Sri Lanka exported 6,773 mt of mattress fibre during the period in 2004, up from the previous year's 4,864 mt while Bristle fibre exports reached 479 mt, up from 383 mt in 2003.

Twisted fibre exports reached 2,577 mt, down from 3,370 mt in 2003. Coconut ekels exports rose by 27 per cent to 1,057 mt in the first two months period of 2004 from 834 mt, a year earlier during the corresponding period. Fibre dust exports rose by 24 per cent to 18,259 mt, while Moulded coir products meant for using horticulture rose by 1,770 per cent to 6,863 mt. Coconut based arrack exports also increased by 364 per cent to 21,917 mt.

The total exports of Desiccated coconut during the period Jan. - Feb. 2004 up by 298 per cent to 8,853 mt from 2,223 mt in 2003. The desiccated coconut was exported to 54 countries. India is now the main buyer of Sri Lankan Desiccated coconut importing 1,605 mt.

The main export markets of Desiccated coconut exports were the European Union, Asia, Africa and Middle East where the market share is 29%, 20%, 18% and 17%.

In the European Union Market, Germany, France, Portugal, Greece, Spain and United Kingdom had a relatively higher import demand of the Desiccated coconut than other countries. The six countries imported 91 per cent, 2,301 mt in 2004, an increase of 445 per cent over the 2003 figure at 423 mt. In the Asian market India took 93 per cent of imports, 1,605 mt in 2004.

In the African market the main importing country was Egypt with market share of 1,403 mt (87%). In the Middle East market the main players were Dubai, Iran and Saudi Arabia. The average export price of Desiccated coconut was US$ 752/mt (fob) in 2004 as against US$ 1,006/mt (fob) in 2003.

Export of Copra increased by 31 per cent during the period January - February 2004 to 3,179 mt from 2,433 mt during the same period a year ago.

Pakistan was the biggest importer at 3,142 mt with limited quantities going to Oman at 22 mt and Iran 15 mt. Average traded price at US$ 624/mt (fob) was 24 per cent off year ago at US$ 816/mt.

The major 10 of the list of Sri Lankan coconut products importing countries during the period January - February 2004 were USA, Pakistan, Germany, Japan, United Kingdom, Netherlands, South Korea, Egypt, Iran and France.
