CH and FC - Police clash should be a thriller

A terrific tussle for supremacy can be expected today when the high-riding Sri Lanka Police confront the unbeaten CH and FC in their Caltex 'A' Division League rugby match at Maitland Crescent at 5.15 pm.

The policemen are in a buoyant mood after their sensational 24-23 win over the formidable CR and FC and will go all out to topple the CH and FC which scored a resounding 41-15 win over Navy last week having overcome Air Force 23-12 a fortnight ago.

Possession will play a vital role in the final outcome. In the set scrums CH skipper Sameera Wijeyesinghe should get the better of his vis-a-vis Asela Muthumala while in the line-outs the Police duo of Wilson and Dharmatilleke should hold sway.

In the loose the power-packed Police forwards Anura Fernando, Muthumala, Shantha Rohana, Wilson, Herath and Apisei Vao will face a fierce challenge from CH and FC's Cooray, Ranaweera, Jayasekara, Bandara, Lewke and Rakata.

Police's three quarters too have stood out in both attack and defence. In veteran Sudath Sampath and Luke Rogayawa the Policemen have a fine halves combination while Nilusha Fernando, Champika Thushara and Danushka Pududu are powerful runners who will test the CH defence to the hilt today with full-back Harshana Wijaweera joining the line to form the overlap.

It is left to be seen how CH's new halves combination of Roy Nishantha and Saranga Jayakody will perform today. If they click, the lads from Maitland Crescent too could make the maximum use of the 'good ball' that comes their way as they have some hard and penetrative runners in centre Jim Bolokoro and wingers Dinesh Kumara and Rukshan Wijesinghe.

The Teams:

CH and FC: Sashika Coorey, Sameera Wijeyesinghe (captain), Jayantha Ranaweera, Senaka Bandara, Berlife Jayasekera, Kinijoji Rakata, Asanka Thalagalarachchi, Dushanth Lewke, Roy Nishantha and Saranga Jayakody, Dinesh Kumara, Jim Bolokoro, Varuna de Silva, Rukshan Wijesinghe, Nalin Dissanayake.

Police: Anura Fernando (captain), Asela Muthumala, Shantha Rohana, Pradeep Wilson, Anuradha Dharmatillaka, T. D. Herath, T. Seneviratne, Apisai Vao, Sudath Sampath and Luke Rogayawa, Danushka Pubudu, Nilusha Fernando, Champika Thushara, Sujeewa, Harshana Wijeweera. - (R.S.)
