NEW DELHI, Thursday (Reuters, AFP) India's Gandhi family swept back to power on Thursday on a stunning
wave of anger among millions of rural poor, who felt left behind by the
country's economic boom and voted out the Hindu nationalist government.
Sonia Gandhi, in her first reaction since her Congress party swept to
power in India, said Thursday she would form a "strong, stable and
secular government." Powell reiterates US support in Govt's quest for peace from Pramod de Silva in Washington D.C. The United States will continue to support the government in its quest
for peace, Secretary of State Colin Powell and Deputy Secretary of State
Richard Armitage assured Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar on
Wednesday. 'Peace talks announcement in a day or two' The Government and the LTTE have agreed on most of the fundamental
issues related to resumption of peace talks, and a decision would be
reached in a day or two on a time and place for restarting the peace
talks. US Secretary of State Powell: Full support for new Government Pramod de Silva in Washington D.C. The peace talks will be long and hard but the government and the
international community will never agree to a separate state, Foreign
Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar said on Wednesday. "There is no way we
can grant a separate state. India, US and other countries have said 'no'
to a separate state. Something less than that will be welcome,"
