by Florence Wickramage The Environment and Natural Resources Ministry will take immediate action to set up a National Policy to protect the country's waterfalls and water resources due to the many threats currently directed at them. Environment and Natural Resources Deputy Minister Bandula Basnayake said that this step has been taken on the directions of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga whose attention has been drawn to the importance of protecting and preserving our natural heritage. As a first step the Environment and Natural Resources Ministry will initiate a national discussion with registered Environmental groups for the purpose of drawing up, finalising and enforcing a Special Conservation Law for Waterfalls. The Ministry's extended program will include schools education programs on the necessity to conserve our natural heritages. In addition to the above the Environment and Natural Resources Ministry will request the Inspector General of Police to take strict legal action against those visitors who consume liquor and misbehave while visiting such environmentally beautiful places of national interest. |
