Business community to help integrate ex-combatants

by Sudarshana Perera

The International Organisation for Migrants (IOM) is seeking the assistance and active participation of the Sri Lankan business community to re-integrate ex-combatants with direct employment through vocational training, skills development and self-employment opportunities. The program named "Reclaim" will be spearheaded by the local business community since their role is vital to ensure opportunities for employment and skills development.

The business community extended its cooperation towards this initiative and wanted the IOM to plan out a comprehensive strategy to spearhead the program. This was made known at a workshop organised by the National Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday which plays an intermediary role in this endeavour.

Senior Deputy President, National Chamber of Commerce, Mrs M. Samaratunga said that the role of the private sector will be one of assisting and supporting the Reclaim Project which seeks to assist those ex-combatants through identification of avenues for direct employment, providing vocational training, skills development and creation of self-employment opportunities.

Samaratunga also proposed to set up a Working Committee jointly chaired by IOM and NCCSL with representatives from other chambers.

Chief of Mission , IOM, Mrs Mary Sheehan said that her organisation is expecting the cooperation of the business community by way of registering in its Service Provider Database, updating periodically with information on new opportunities and extending support to those referred.
