LTTE ready to resume talks The LTTE said yesterday that they were ready to resume peace talks. "The Liberation Tigers are fully prepared to resume the negotiations on the same principles and atmosphere as it did with the previous government in Colombo," the Tamilnet website quoted the Head of the LTTE Political Wing, S.P. Thamilselvam as telling journalists in Kilinochchi. Responding to a question on how soon the negotiations would resume, Thamilselvam said that talks can begin when the Government says it is ready. Norway's Peace envoy Erik Solheim and Ambassador Hans Bratskar met with Thamilselvam at the Peace Secretariat in Kilinochchi. According to a report of the meeting posted on the LTTE Peace Secretariat Website, Solheim briefing Thamilselvam in detail of the meeting he had with President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga on Sunday said the President was fully committed to the peace process and upholding the Ceasefire Agreement. Confirming the LTTE's commitment to the peace process and the CFA, the Political Wing Head said that Norway's role is vital and should continue. He emphasized the moral responsibility of the LTTE in taking forward the Tamil mandate to work for the institutionalizing of the Interim Self Government Authority and to work towards a lasting negotiated settlement Thamilselvam reiterated that the President and her team should work hard to remove any sense of suspicion they have towards the intentions of the LTTE and refrain from any involvement with Karuna and his men. The Norwegian peace facilitators were scheduled to meet President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga later last night to brief her on the outcome of the meeting with the LTTE Political Chief. |
