PM promises to uplift Pirivena education

Sigiriya Group Correspondent

The United People's Freedom Front is committed to safeguard the rights of the Buddhist taking appropriate steps to meet the challenges. There had been a request earlier by the Buddhist clergy. We are considering that.

We know very well that had it not been due to the untiring efforts of the Maha Sangha, Buddhism would have perished, said the Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse addressing the commemorative meeting of the 3rd anniversary of unveiling the golden painted Buddha statue at the Rangiri Dambulla Uyanwatta Raja Maha Viharaya.

The Prime Minister said that other temples should follow the example set by the Rangiri Dambulla Temple guided by Ven. Inamaluwe Sumangala Thera - where it is not only a place of worship but a centre of varied social services. He said the Rangiri Dambulla Uyanwatta Temple has its own vocational training centre where 200 students study in various fields. Today it has a new branch that is a printing press.

One hundred and four computers donated by the Korean-Sri Lanka Friendship Association are to be distributed among the Pirivenas.

The Premier said under new educational reforms, the President who is the Minister of Education plans to make several changes. Pirivena education will be uplifted. Pali and Sanskrit will be given priority. We hope to adopt new national policy.

Whatever projects which are found to be beneficial will be completed. The normal procedure is that work suffers whenever a government changes. There are 75 bridges and roads to be completed and we shall finish them. That is our policy.

Venerable Inamaluwe Sumangala Thera thanked the Korean-Sri Lanka Friendship Association for their presentation.

The Thera made a special mention of Dr. Kim and other representatives present. He also thanked the Prime Minister for his support and said it was a great honour to the Maha Sangha and the general public.
