LSSP welcomes President's decision on peace talks

The Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP) has congratulated President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga for requesting the Norwegian mediators to take early steps to rescue the stalled talks between the Government and the LTTE to carry forward the peace process.

"We are also happy about the decision of the Alliance Government to take prompt action to fulfil some of the more important election promises. We refer to the decision to reduce the price of fertiliser, increasing the salaries of Government employees and the granting of trainee-jobs to over 27,000 unemployed graduates in the country.

We hope these measures will be implemented without delay", the Acting General Secretary of the LSSP Wimalasiri de Mel said yesterday in a press release.

The release states: "We are also pleased that the JVP members of Parliament have finally taken oaths as Ministers and Deputy Ministers ending speculation regarding the future of the Alliance itself.

We have no doubt that this would be a great relief to our people who voted the Alliance to power.

It is the view of the Lanka Sama Samaja Party that any promises made to any party or the people must be duly honoured and petty considerations should not be allowed to undermine the unity that has been achieved.

Our country today faces a grim economic situation with a heavy burden of foreign debt which has made our society loose its traditional, social and cultural values.

This is the result of the policies adopted by the Untied National Party that came to power in 1977 and followed by successive Governments since then.

The Alliance Government must use the mandate it has received to depart from these policies and pursue an alternative program of action that would place greater emphasis on self reliance and pave the way for a course of development that would be free of corruptions, bribery and nepotism.

Our party shall continue to support the Alliance Government in all the steps that it takes in that direction to implement the promises given to the people."
