Curfew lifted in Kandapola

by Asanga Warnakulasuriya

Kandapola, Nuwara-Eliya completely returned to normality yesterday following the clashes on Wednesday, Police said. Central Range DIG Wimal Ariyaratne told the Daily News that Police decided to lift curfew as the situation was under control.

But the Police and Army will continue to patrol the area, he added. "Day to day activities, which were hampered during the last two days, were returning to normal with the lifting of the curfew," Police said. Meanwhile, Director of Police Public Relations, SSP Rienzie Perera said that though a few incidents were reported during last 24 hours, they had no impact on the peaceful situation.

Minister of Community development, C.B. Ratnayeka condemning the violence said it is deplorable that this ethnic violence is a great drawback for the development of the country.

"I wish to express my heartfelt sympathy to the victim of the violence and their families, for not only the loss of their loved ones, but also the properties damaged," the Minister said.
