Colombo consumers' price index for April 2004 The Colombo Consumers' Price Index (CCPI) for April 2004 was 3471.3. This shows an increase of 45.0 index points or 1.3 per cent from the March 2004 index number of 3426.3. This is an increase of Rs. 91.09 in the Expenditure Value of "Market basket" when compared to March 2004, a press release from the Department of Census and Statistics stated. The increase in the CCPI for April 2004 is mainly due to increase in prices of rice, condensed milk, pepper, limes, red onions, sweet potatoes, coconut oil, beef, mutton, most varieties of fresh fish and dried fish, coconuts, eggs, potatoes, some varieties of vegetables and firewood. These price increases in food items can be mainly attributed to high demand of consumer goods in the main markets in Colombo city due to festive season. However, prices of sugar, dried chillies, cummin seed and some varieties of fresh fish have decreased during this month. Although the CCPI increased during April 2004 compared to the previous month, the annual inflation rate on the basis of 12 months moving average decreased to 3.7 per cent in April 2004 from 3.9 per cent in March, 2004. |
