Tens of thousands to flock at May Day rallies

Tens of thousands of workers will gather at different venues in Colombo and the provinces to re-dedicate themselves towards worker solidarity and emancipation today which is International Labour Day.

As in all past May day celebrations, they will assemble under the diverse trade union and political banners and march in procession to converge at the final meeting venues where speaker after speaker would extol the status of the common man and reassert his right to a decent wage while taking to task the "exploiters" of the working class.

With the heat generated by the recent general election battle still fresh, political parties both victors and the vanquished are bound to use this May day as a show of strength.

The United Peoples' Freedom Alliance fresh from its triumphs at the General Election and the Wayamba Provincial poll is expected to attract a massive crowd at its joint May Day Rally to be held at the Town Hall Colombo Municipal Council Grounds.

All partners of the Freedom Alliance will start their demonstrations and marches from different venues in the City. The JVP will march from the BRC Grounds, the LSSP from opposite the N.M.Perera statue in Rajagiriya and the Communist Party from Campbell Park and converge at Town Hall.

The United National Party will hold its May Day Rally at the Senanayake Park in Badulla with party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe scheduled to address partymen.

Its two alliance partners the CWC and the UPF will stage their May Day rallies at Bandarawela and Pussellawa respectively.

The CMU will hold its May day rally at its headquarters opposite the Colombo Plaza Hotel in Kollupitiya with veteran Trade Union Leader Bala Thampoe the main speaker. The July strikers will hold their meeting at the National Library Auditorium.

The Christian Workers Fellowship (CWF) will celebrate its May Day Workers Mass this year at the Stanley Jansz Playground in Kollupitiya.
