Indo-Lanka Defence deal talks soon Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar reiterated the Sri Lankan Government's desire to further strengthen and deepen the close and cordial relations between Sri Lanka and India, states an Indian High Commission press release. He expressed this view during extensive discussions with his Indian counterpart Shri Yashwant Sinha during his just concluded official visit to India. All issues of mutual interest were taken up at these discussions. Both sides reiterated their desire to work closely in International fora and to take coordinated positions on bilateral, regional and global issues of common interest. Both Ministers agreed to resume discussions soon on agreements being negotiated between the two countries in the areas of comprehensive economic partnership and defence cooperation and to strengthen cooperation in areas of energy, transport and IT sectors. The Sri Lankan Foreign Minister also apprised the Indian side of recent developments in Sri Lanka including the peace process.The Government of India expressed the hope for an early resumption of the peace process and for a negotiated settlement acceptable to all sections of Sri Lankan society within the framework of a united Sri Lanka and consistent with democracy, pluralism and respect for individual rights. India believes that an enduring solution has to emerge purely through internal political processes. The Foreign Minister also had discussions with India's National Security Advisor Shri Brajesh Mishra. |
