On the Sunny side of Nuwara Eliya

Text and Photographs by Prasad Abu Bakr

Hotel Sunhill is perfectly situated on Unique View Road in Nuwara Eliya. it is a unique view indeed from the upper floors of this well compact 20-room hotel that actually started off as a guest house in 1978. Today it stands among the cluster of small and medium star class hotels in no small measure.

Hotel Sunhill stands tall as you approach it from the road.

There are ten deluxe rooms elegantly furnished with the best view of the Piduruthalagala mountain range. The interiors of these rooms are furnished with the maximum of comfort in mind, spacious enough to be converted into a family room. It is in fact very popular amongst families during the season.

Situated at a location overlooking the city's Town Hall and the racing tracks, Hotel Sunhill is popular all year around not only among locals who reserve their rooms well in advance long before each season starts but also among foreigners during the tourist season.

At the reception counter you are greeted by Priyanthi, who has been a long-standing Public Relations Executive at the hotel. On the right of the reception is a cosy sitting area which leads to the main restaurant where most of the special meals are served.

The restaurant serves a variety of dishes ranging from local preparations to a mouth-watering selection of oriental foods, this main restaurant of the hotel can accommodate up to 120 persons at a time.

The well stocked bar with its smart barman.

A left exit from the restaurant brings you to the landing that will lead you to the main lounge on to the left that doubles up as a TV and leisure lounge as well, on to the right is the hotel's bar and recreational area which serves a variety of beverages including a wide range of cocktails.

The bar with a pub atmosphere is an ideal spot to wind up in the evenings after dinner. It is also open to outside guests and can accommodate visitors inside within the cosy surroundings or outside in the lawn, which is an ideal setting during a misty evening.

The bedrooms are located in the upper floors of the hotel while the Unique View Lounge is also located within those areas, the lounge which can have around 100 guests is largely used for conferences, cocktails and other occasions which calls for extended banquet facilities.

Among the other facilities the hotel has to offer are a 24 hour laundry service, a sports centre, IDD facilities for long distance callers, Doctor on 24 hour call and arranging of tours for visitors to travel to interesting locations surrounding the vicinity of Nuwara Eliya. Horton Plains, Hakgala Gardens and the many tea factories in the area owned and operated by large multinational companies.

Hotel Sunhill is managed under the watchful eyes of its Managing Director Vasantha Perera who has been in the Hotel Industry for many years. In the brochure that has been designed for the purpose of promoting the hotel a special note has been included with reference to the history of Nuwara Eliya.

It reads..: Samuel Baker when he walked into the valley of Nuwara Eliya initially found it to be a heaven and noted many similarities of his country England to this salubrious city. From then on until today it has attracted many, both local and foreign tourists who came here for its charming surroundings and cool climatic conditions.

The Piduruthalagala mountain range, Hakgala Botanical gardens, Queen Victoria park, Horton plains founded by Thomas Farr and Lake Gregory are all natures gift to Nuwara Eliya, it ends. And it needs to be mentioned that Hotel Sunhill has become an integral part of all that charm.
