Extremists beaten to death

DHAKA, Monday (AFP) Villagers beat to death seven suspected members of a banned left-wing extremist group Sunday and injured three others in southwestern Bangladesh, a television report said.

The alleged extremists opened fire when residents surrounded the group of 10 before beating them in a remote village in Faridpur district, 56 kilometers (35 miles) southwest of Dhaka, ATN Bangla television channel said.

It said seven died due to the beatings, while two of the injured fled and one was arrested by police.

The extremist group was not identified and officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

Police say bands of militants thrive on crime including abductions for ransom and extortion in the country's south and southwestern areas.
