Mahesh to referee at Asian C'ships

Mahesh Nishan Abeywickrema the youngest international hockey referee from Sri Lanka left for Karachchi, Pakistan to officiate at the ongoing 5th Asian Hockey championships. He is the seventh international referee to be produced by Sri Lanka in its 112 year hockey history.

Abeywickrema an old boy of Ananda College Colombo has represented his alma mater during his school career in the age groups u-13, 15, 17 and 19. He took to officiating in matches in the year 1997 has come a long way to reach the top and bring honour to his country and his school. Up to date he has controlled around 42 games at junior national level and 58 senior national games.

Abeywickrema junior executive of Clipsal Lanka (Pvt) Limited has been holding the secretary's position of the Hockey Referees Committee for the last five years. He is also a qualified coach for the sport and trained the Sampath Bank hockey team in 1998 and 1999.

The teams participating in the ongoing championships are India, Japan, Korea, China, Malaysia, Chinese Taipei, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Singapore and the hosts Pakistan. - (BP)
