Karu Jayasuriya sorry and concerned

Gamapaha District MP and UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya has expressed sorrow and concern about the propaganda carried out against the Maha Sangha following the situation which had arisen consequent to the elections held to the post of Parliamentary Speaker.

In a press release issued yesterday Mr. Jayasuriya said W.J.M. Lokubandara who was elected speaker was a mature politician and patriot who highly respected the Maha Sangha as well as dignitaries of other religions. D.E.W. Gunasekera who contested him is also a mature politician who knew political traditions well.

Mr. Lokubandara was elected through an election held according to standing orders and any one who acted democratically and knew those principles could accept that result. It is regrettable to note that certain sections who could not prevail against this decision were now making public statements critical of the Maha Sangha.

He would therefore request the relevant parties to desist from such bitter responses aimed at the Maha Sangha who had given leadership to protect our heritage and civilisation for over 2500 years.

Mr. Jayasuriya said that although there may be different views regarding the entry of the Maha Sangha to Parliament it was the duty of all to offer them their due respect.

The Maha Sangha have renounced all worldly benefits and entered the Sasana through compassion and love for all beings and we should be humble enough to correct our wrongs if any by listening to their advice because every religious dignitary was way ahead of us laymen in a super mundane journey.

Mr. Jayasuriya said "the Vesak season is just round the corner and this season reminded us of this journey.

I would therefore request all parties to desist from castigating the Maha Sangha at least during the Vesak season.
