Hela Urumaya Dharmarajya concept a canard - D.E.W. Gunesekera

Attanagalla Special Correspondent

General Secretary of the Communist Party of Sri Lanka (CPSL) D. E. W. Gunasekera said that from what could already be seen, the Jathika Hela Urumaya's Dharmarajya concept was a mere canard. It is a catspow of the UNP that stands for the interests of the capitalists.

D.E.W. Gunasekera made these observations at a meeting held at Madugas-walawwa, Yakkala, Gampaha on Sunday (25).

The meeting was organised by Public Administration and Home Affairs Deputy Minister Pandu Bandaranayake to educate the Gampaha electorate's SLFP activists on the current political situation.

The JHU betrayed over five lakhs of voters who voted for them, Mr. Gunasekera said. He also said that it was now all the more clear that the Hela Urumaya was financially supported by the UNP.

As we are aware, the stand of the JHU earlier was that they would support the Freedom Alliance government in Parliament in times of crisis. But those promises were not kept.

The JHU's sudden about turn suggests that there is a conspiracy to oust the Freedom Alliance government from power, Mr. Gunasekera remarked.

Referring to the future challenges faced by the newly elected Alliance government, D.E.W. Gunasekera said steps should be taken to resolve the ethnic conflict quickly. The foremost need of the country today is peace. Nothing can be done without peace, he said.

He also stressed that before going to the negotiation table, the constituent parties in the Alliance government should reach a common understanding on the issue of power sharing.

Public Administration and Home Affairs Deputy Minister Pandu Bandaranayake said that UPFA government has project plans to solve the common man's problems as given in its manifesto.

Former Parliamentarian S. D. Bandaranayake and several others also spoke.
