Thilanga will not bat until he is cleared Sri Lanka Cricket has appointed three-time former President Thilanga Sumathipala to manage its international affairs. However, Sumathipala, while thanking the Sri Lanka Cricket Ex-Co for the appointment, has turned down the offer until he clears his name in an ongoing legal procedure. President of the Sri Lanka Cricket, Mohan de Silva said yesterday that Sumathipala's name has been named for the post as a recognition for his services for Sri Lanka Cricket. "As immediate past President of Sri Lanka Cricket, Sumathipala currently serves as a member of the executive committee. We thought he is the best man to handle international affairs, particularly with the issues of the WSG Nimbus problem and several other important matters," de Silva said. Sumathipala is currently in remand custody. However with respect and regard to the confidence Sri Lanka Cricket had in him and the knowledge of cricket administration rendered during his tenure in office as President, his ambition was to give Sri Lankan youth from every corner of the country an equal opportunity to represent Sri Lanka Cricket. He wanted cricket to be devoid of ethnic, religion and social barriers and with this objective he actively pursued to obtain international exposure for our junior teams etc. Sumathipala's vision of a five-year business plan put in place will ensure the success of Sri Lanka Cricket. Sri Lanka Cricket informed that Thilanga Sumathipala's appointment on International Affairs it took during the Annual General Meeting and was unanimously elected by the General Membership. Consequently, Sumathipala was informed of the resolution by the general membership unanimously with regard to his appointment to represent Sri Lanka Cricket in International Affairs whereupon, he thanked Sri Lanka Cricket for the confidence they have reposed in him; and informed that he is more than willing to be of assistance for the improvement of Sri Lanka Cricket but reminded that until his name is cleared of all accusations which matters are pending in Courts he does not intend to represent Sri Lanka Cricket in International Affairs. |
