Vaas routs Zimbabwe to put Lanka 2-0 ahead Saadi Thawfeeq reporting from Zimbabwe Chaminda Vaas continued to be the nemesis of Zimbabwe when he sliced through their top order batting taking four wickets for 38 runs to earn Sri Lanka a comfortable nine-wicket win in the second one-day international played at the Queens Sports Club here today. The back-to-back matches ended shortly after lunch with Sri Lanka making short work of the paltry Zimbabwe total of 136 off 36.4 overs. Spurred on by opener Saman Jayantha's maiden one-day international half-century Sri Lanka knocked the runs off in 20.5 overs scoring 139-1 to go two-up in the five-match series. Zimbabwe were reminded of the dark days at the SSC three years ago when Vaas took a world record of eight wickets for 19 runs to send them crashing to their lowest ever one-day total of 38. Today after skipper Marvan Atapattu had won his second successive toss and invited Zimbabwe to bat again, Vaas bowling with great hostility on the same pitch used for the first one-day game, picked up the first four Zimbabwe wickets to have them reeling at 27-4 by the ninth over. Off his fourth ball he trapped Vusimuzi Sibanda lbw for a duck and then went onto add the wickets of Brendon Taylor (2), vice captain Dion Ebrahim (16) and Elton Chigumbura (0) to come off with an impressive first spell of four for 33 off eight overs to move within three wickets of reaching a milestone of 300 wickets in one-day internationals. His performance earned him the man-of-the match award. Nuwan Zoysa from the other end did not have much success ending his six over spell with figures of none for 21. Any chance Zimbabwe had of making a similar recovery as in the first one-dayer on Tuesday was dashed when their captain Tatendra Taibu, who hit a career best 96 not out on that occasion was run out for 35 in the 22nd over. Taibu attempted a risky second run on the leg side and failed to beat substitute fielder Rangana Herath's throw to wicket-keeper Kumar Sangakkara. With his departure at 76-5, Zimbabwe's hopes of putting up a competitive total disappeared. Stuart Matsikenyeri (18) helped Taibu add 49 off 80 balls for the fifth wicket, which was the highest partnership of the Zimbabwean innings. The bottom half of the Zimbabwe batting was consumed by off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan who ended up with four wickets for 32 while Sanath Jayasuriya picked up the fifth. Prosper Utseya lived up to his first name to score an undefeated 25 off 32 balls inclusive of a six and a four, but overall Zimbabwe's total was hardly going to pose a threat for Sri Lanka's strong batting line up. In the 45 minutes before lunch, openers Jayantha and Jayasuriya rattled off 84 off 65 balls for the first wicket. Jayantha, playing in only his third one-day international went to lunch at 43 and shortly afterwards completed his maiden fifty off 45 balls by pulling Douglas Hondo to square leg for four. He batted aggressively for his unbeaten knock of 74, which came off 64 balls and comprised 12 fours. Sri Lanka lost Jayasuriya in the final over before the break for 31 when he mistimed a drive and skied the ball to mid-off. Jayasuriya made his runs off 29 balls inclusive of four fours and a six over extra cover which carried him past Aravinda de Silva's record one-day aggregate of 9284 runs and made him the leading run-getter for his country in this type of game. Jayasuriya was playing in his 315th one-day international, seven more than De Silva, and he now stands fifth in the all-time list with an aggregate of 9286 runs behind Sachin Tendulkar (13134), Inzamam-ul-Haq (9796), Mohammad Azharuddin (9378), and Sourav Ganguly (9309). Atapattu joined Jayantha and took Sri Lanka past Zimbabwe's total sharing an unbroken 55-run second wicket stand off 10 overs. The two teams move to Harare for the remaining three one-day internationals of the series starting on Sunday. ZIMBABWE V. Sibanda lbw b Vaas 0 B. Taylor c Jayantha b Vaas 2 D.
