Increased funding for universities

Treasury Secretary P.B. Jayasundara has agreed in principal to increase the funding for the State universities, at a meeting attended by Vice Chancellors of all universities yesterday at the Finance Ministry.

The meeting which was to be chaired by the Finance Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama was scheduled to discuss the shortcomings of universities that had been agitated over by the university authorities and students.

A report outlining the shortcomings of universities particularly, due to the recent cut down in State funding for the higher Education was handed over to the Treasury Secretary by the University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof. Ranjit Mendis at the meeting yesterday.

The Finance Minister soon after assuming office has pledged his commitment to developing the education sector with increased funding and President as the Education minister has arranged for the immediate resolution of burning issues in the university sector.

Education Ministry Secretary Dr.Tara de Mel coordinated the meeting also attended by UGC Vice Chairman Prof. L. Ratnayake and Treasury Deputy Secretary S.B. Divaratne.
