'Tour Expo 2004' to boost tourist and travel sector In a major move to promote the tourist and travel sector, the Sri Lankan Tourist Board (SLTB) with key local travel agents and hoteliers will participate in the "Tour Expo 2004" to be held at Intex Osaka, Japan from May 1 to 4. "Tour Expo 2004", a major international travel and tourism trade fair will provide avenues to promote Sri Lanka as a tourist destination with diverse attractions. The participants will exhibit local handicrafts, Ceylon tea, ayurveda remedies and their new products at the booth. They will also sell tour packages directly to consumers to visit Sri Lanka", he said. An official of the SLTB said participants of Tour Expo are expecting around 120,000 visitors this year. A special program "Talk show" by a well-known TV presenter in Japan, Wicky San will be presented at the Sri Lankan stall to boost the tourism industry. He said following the results achieved last year we have obtained 36sqm floor area to share with local travel participants. "This year the trade fair takes on a new focus with attractive exhibits and a new name, "Intex Festa", a consumer-based fair targeted to improve the family interests such as food, clothing, home and fun", he said. Over 1,000 travel related companies and organisations mainly from the Kansai area will play a key role in this event. Among the prospective exhibitors are the overseas government tourism bureau, local government tourism promotion offices, travel agencies, transportation companies (airline, railways, buses and ferries) accommodation companies (hotels, inns and resorts), manufacturers and distributors of travel-related goods and services will participate. Founded in 1954 as the first ever trade fair in Asia the Tour Expo has been organised by the Osaka International Trade Fair Commission annually to promote economic ties between Osaka and overseas countries.
