Indian women clinch Singer Asia Cup by Chris Dhambarage The Indian women's cricket team clinched the Singer Asia Cup when they took an unbeatable three nil lead in the five match series defeating Sri Lanka by six wickets in the third match played at the SSC grounds, Maitland Place yesterday. The Lankans were shot out for just 89 runs in 39.3 overs and the Indians raced to their target comfortably scoring 90 for 4 with 25 overs to spare. Sri Lanka and India were compelled to play the series in a best of five matches after the Pakistan team failed to turn up for the scheduled triangular tournament. Sri Lanka failed to reach the three figure mark for the third successive match with only Hiruka Fernando offering any real resistance against some penetrative bowling. Fernando batting at number five hit a top score of 24 from 64 balls with the help of two boundaries. Opening bowler Jhoolan Goswami did the initial damage before Nooshin Al Khadeer added the finishing touches with a four wicket haul. In fact Khadeer with this performance increased her tally to eight wickets from three games and have put herself in contention for the player of the series award. |
