Army deserter kills himself in bomb blast

by Sandasen Marasinghe

An Army deserter died after a bomb blast at his residence on Tuesday. He succumbed to his injuries at the Colombo National Hospital.

M. D. Ruwan Jayantha (27) of Kuliyapitiya, the victim had left the Army in 2000. Later he engaged in several odd jobs and subsequently worked as a driver for Provincial Counsellor Hemamal Nanayakkara, Galle.

The blast occurred on April 13, at his residence in Kuliyapitiya. The victim was a father of three boys aged 5, 3 and 2. This was revealed at inquest held before the Additional City Coroner M. Ashroff Rumy, on Wednesday.

The victim went out of the house on the day in question and later his wife heard a blast and was found him bleeding from the head. He was rushed to the hospital and died six days after the incident.

Lakmali Priyadarsani (23), wife of the victim said in evidence that her husband was in a depressed state of mind since he had lost his salary. He was worried as he could not buy new clothes for the children for the Sinhala New Year.

On April 13, he left home in the morning to find some money for this purpose but returned in the evening empty handed under the influence of liquor.

"Later he was crying claiming he could not find any money but I scolded him as he had consumed liquor", the wife of the victim said.

She stated that her husband left the house asking her to look after the children, before the bomb blast. The Police told her that it was a bomb and she did not know where he found the bomb.

AJMO Dr A. Dayapala noted that the death was due to cranio cerebral injuries sustained from blast. The Additional City Coroner postponed the verdict for May 20. Evidence was led by Kuliyapitiya Police.
