Identifying creative talents of youth will be prioritised - Jeevan

by Hemasiri Dheeraratne

New Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Jeevan Kumaratunga called for the fullest cooperation from his Ministry staff to restructure the Ministry to bring sports and youth activities from town to village and identifying creative talents of youth.

Minister Kumaratunga said the intention of the ministry should be to provide assistance to youth who are skilled in sports to emerge to the national level and later provide them with the opportunity to represent the country at international level after assuming duties.

The Minister said: "We have already reached international level in several fields of activity bringing fame to the country. Therefore it will not be difficult for us to reach our expected targets."

More talented and disciplined sportsmen should be produced, who love their motherland and safeguard our national identity, he said.

Kumaratunga said during recent times, various problems have cropped up in the sports sphere. There are many occasions where sports activities have been paralysed due to various disputes created between officials and sportsmen. In addition, the lack of unity among certain sports clubs have become one of the major obstacles for the development of sports.

Meanwhile the deterioration of discipline from top to bottom is also another key obstacle for the decline in sports, Kumaratunga said. The Minister said: "We have already reached to the international level from several sectors by bringing international fame to the country. Therefore it will not difficult for us to reach our expected targets."

Meanwhile the deterioration of discipline from top to bottom is also another key obstacle to the decline in the sports sector." I will discuss with ministry officials, sportsmen and sports clubs with the intention of bringing an immediate solution to develop the sports sector," the Minister said.

Deputy Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Sripathi Suriaarachchi said he will dedicate himself to work as his deputy to achieve the set targets of the Ministry.
