Batty's statements not reflection of LSSP views

The Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP) issuing a statement on the resignation of Batty Weerakoon from the post of General Secretary said: a special meeting of the Central Committee (CC) of the LSSP was held on April 18 to consider the vacancy arising from the resignation of the Party General Secretary, Batty Weerakoon.

Mr. Weerakoon who attended the meeting explained his position, presented a detailed account of his service to the Party and left the meeting despite many requests from members of the CC that he should wait and listen to their views. Mr. Weerakoon departed by stating that he is no longer the Gen. Secretary of the Party and do not wish to return to the post under any circumstances and that he would continue to be Sama Samajist and act independently.

The LSSP in a statement yesterday said the Central Committee which met from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. discussed at length the political developments in the country and there was general acceptance of the line of policy adopted by the Party in the present context. There was no opposition to Prof. Tissa Vitarana accepting office as Minister in the UPFA Government.

Thereafter, the Central Committee proceeded to appoint Wimalasiri de Mel, Deputy Secretary to assume the duties of the General Secretary until the next conference of the Party.

We hereby inform the general public that the public statements now being made by Mr. Batty Weerakoon do not reflect the views of the LSSP and are best treated as his personal views".
