| Government, Opposition Parliamentary Groups meet The Government and Opposition Parliamentary Groups met yesterday. The Government Party Parliamentary Group meeting held at President's House was presided over by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga. Government Parliamentary Group sources told the Daily News that Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse had explained the voting procedure at the election of a Speaker. The Government Group decided to nominate Communist Party Secretary General D. E. W. Gunasekera as the UPFA candidate. Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment Promotion Anura Bandaranaike was chosen as the Leader of the House and Minister of Trade, Commerce and Consumer Affairs Jeyaraj Fernandopulle as the Chief Government Whip. Members of all parties constituting the UPFA attended the meeting except for a few who were campaigning for the Wayamba Provincial Council elections. Meanwhile, Ariyaratne Ganegoda and Nirushi Wimalaweera report that the UNP's Parliamentary Group yesterday unanimously decided to present senior UNP Parliamentarian and Badulla District MP W.J.M. Lokubandara as the party's nominee for the post of Speaker. The Party's media spokesman Gayantha Karunathilake said this decision was taken at the Parliamentary Group meeting held under the patronage of UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe at 10 a.m. yesterday at the Parliamentary Complex. Further, a decision was taken at this meeting to despatch a team of UNP MPs to the Wayamba soon after the ceremony in Parliament today, to participate in the election campaign there. |
