Cabinet discusses cost of living, economy The first Cabinet meeting of the UPFA Government was held at the President's House, chaired by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga yesterday. The Government's future economic policy was discussed at length at the meeting. Posts and pre election appointments to government institutions, the ways to bring down cost of living and the fertilizer subsidy were also among the topics that were taken up, official sources said. Information and Media Minister Reginald Cooray was appointed as the Cabinet spokesman by the Cabinet of Ministers with the concurrence of the President yesterday. A press briefing is to be held by the Cabinet spokesman at the Government Information Department today at 5.00 pm. ####### Ammunition found on sea bed Pulmudai Police yesterday recovered several wooden boxes containing over 700 T-56 bullets from the bottom of the sea. The bullets were recovered on a tip-off from the fishermen in the area. Investigations revealed that the bullets can still be used for firing and had only being underwater for few months. Police suspects that the LTTE cadres had used the Pulmudai coastal area to import ammunition from South Asia. ######## Reports of bomb blast in Kilinochchi not confirmed - Military Spokesman Military Spokesman Col. Sumedha Perera responding to a report regarding a bomb explosion in an LTTE held uncleared area in Kilinochchi told the Daily News last night that he had heard these reports, but, there was no confirmation of them. ###### CWC will vote for Thondaman's choice Members of the Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) yesterday authorised its leader Arumugam Thondaman to decide whom the CWC will vote for as the Speaker, when Parliament meets this morning. This decision was taken at a meeting attended by the party's elected Parliamentarians, Provincial Council members and trade union representatives. The meeting was held at the Saumya Bhavan, Green Path. ####### Man dies in vehicle crash A sixty-six year old man died on the spot when the vehicle he was travelling hit against three vehicles at Molligoda Wadduwa on Galle road. Police said that the victim Alex Ranatunga (66) was sitting in the front seat of the vehicle when the accident occurred. The driver of the vehicle was seriously injured and admitted to the National hospital in Colombo. The three vehicles were badly damaged. Wadduwa police is conducting investigations. |
