C. Jeyaratnam conferred PhD Retired Additional Deputy Director of Agriculture, Chellappah Jeyaratnam who served the Department for 30 years was awarded the Doctor of Philosophy (honoris causa) by the University of Jaffna, last month. An old student of Jaffna College Vaddukoddai, having obtained a degree in B.Sc Agriculture, in Allahabad University, India in 1953 joined the Department as a Graduate Agricultural Instructor in 1954. In 1975 he joined the Post Graduate Institute of Agriculture Peradeniya and obtained his Master's degree in crop science. He entered the University of Missoturi, USA, and underwent six months training in Agricultural extension planning. During his 30 years service he has worked in extension, education and farm divisions. As Project Manager of the Muthulyan Kaddu settlement scheme in Vavuniya he did yeoman service to the Nation and in particular the North region. It is during this period crops like chilli, onion and groundnut were cultivated in large scale in this scheme and contributed for the gross national production. His other significant contribution was increasing the production of chilli and potato crops in Jaffna district while working as an Assistant Director of Agriculture, in charge for the agriculture production. He was appointed as a member of the university council since 1995 and contributed in many ways for the betterment of the university. As a social worker held the positions of president Navaly YMCA and Hony Treasure Council of JDCSI for over ten years. |
