Twelve-foot pinnacle for Mahaweli Mahaseya The historical Mahaweli Mahaseya (Stupa), the tallest of its kind in 1,300 years, is now being completed. The crowning item of this edifice is its pinnacle. The 12-foot tall pinnacle is currently being cast, under the guidance and supervision of Vidyajoti Dr. A.N.S. Kulasinghe, Chairman Technical Committee of the Mahaweli Cultural Foundation Trust and Member of the Trust, Engineer H.B. Jayasekera, Engineer Vidyajoti Gemunu Silva, Engineer G.H. Patmasiri and Co-Ordinating Secretary of the Trust R.B. Ekanayake. They examined the progress, during a recent visit to Hela Kalayatana factory, Mawanella where the casting is being done. Dr. Kulasinghe gave directions to Ananda Kularatne, who is looking after the casting. Eighty percent of the quantity of the brass (about 2000 Kg) for this work was donated by the Anuradhapura Ran Weta Fund. This donation is worth around Rs. 200,000. The assistance of devoted philanthropist is to obtain the remaining 550 Kg of brass and to meet the expenditure of Rs. 410,000 that has to be incurred to complete the work. Mr. R.B. Ekanayake, Co-ordinating Secretary states "The Trust makes an appeal to generous devotees, to provide these funds and to acquire merit by contributing towards this historical work". Diyawadana Nilame Neranjan Wijayeratne who is the lay patron of the Mahaweli Cultural Foundation Trust has planned to arrange an exposition of the Pinnacle and its Crest Gem donated by a leading gem merchant from Pelmadulla Tissa Ananda at the Sri Dalada Maligawa towards the end of April, to obtain the blessings of the Sacred Tooth Relic for the Mahaweli Mahaseya. Co-ordinating Secretary of the Trust, R.B. Ekanayake said a program is initiated to make the people aware of this noble project to solicit the assistance of all towards the completion of the work of Mahaweli Mahaseya especially during the exposition of the Sacred Tooth Relic from April 17. |
