Alleged car thief nabbed

by Asanga Warnakulasuriya

The Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) yesterday apprehended a youth, a member of a vehicle robber gang who had allegedly assaulted a woman and had robbed her luxury car valued at over Rs.1.3 million.

The Director CCD, SSP Sarath Lugoda told the Daily News yesterday that investigations had revealed that the gang had forcibly stopped the car while she was on her way to her home at Wennappuwa. The gang had allegedly assaulted the woman and had taken her car.

Meanwhile the CCD, investigating into a similar vehicle robbery had received a tip-off that a businessman who had temporarily rented a room in a guest house in Kurunegala is dealing with the stolen vehicles where he had been selling them at much lesser prices than in the market, SSP said.

The CCD officers dressed as "buyers" had met the businessman and later had arrested him. The Director also revealed that the CCD will mainly focus on vehicle robber gangs since the unit which had recovered over 35 stolen vehicles from all parts of the island including Kalmunai is more familiar with trends and techniques used by the robbers.
