Opening of 13th Parliament today

The new Parliament will be ceremonially opened at 10.00 a.m. today. The newly elected 225 members will be sworn in before the Speaker who will be elected in the morning.

The 13th Parliament includes a few significant features chief of which are the nine Bikkhus who were elected through the Jathika Hela Urumaya.

The Government will be led in the House by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse while former Premier Ranil Wickremesinghe will revert to his former Opposition Leader's seat.

On the minority front,the total number of MPs from a single party from the North East has increased to 22. This number from the Tamil National Alliance or the Illangai Tamil Arasu Kachchi surpasses the previous record of 18 MPs from the Tamil United Liberation Front in the 1977 Parliament.

The nominees for the post of Speaker are D.E.W. Gunasekara (UPFA) and W.J.M. Lokubandara (UNF).
