President moves swiftly :

Education back on track

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, who is also the Minister of Education, has already initiated a number of steps to revive the education sector.

President Kumaratunga is paying special attention to resolve problems faced by universities such as insufficient funds and restrictions on the recruitment of staff, both of which have hampered the functioning of the academic work of universities, the Education Ministry said yesterday.

The President will also address the acute problem of lack of sufficient accommodation for university students, which has led to much student unrest and violence in the recent past.

These are among the issues that the President will discuss with the Vice Chancellors of Universities and senior officials of the Ministry of Education on April 26 at President's House. Deputy Ministers for Education, Dinesh Gunawardena and Mangala Samaraweera will also participate in this meeting, which will focus on reviving the education sector which faced neglect during the UNF regime, the Education Ministry said.

A special meeting will be held with all Vice Chancellors of Universities, Secretary of the Ministry of Education Dr. Tara de Mel and Secretary to the Treasury Dr. P.B. Jayasundara on April 22 at the Ministry of Finance.

Two special committees have also been appointed by the Secretary of the Ministry to make recommendations on immediately addressing lack of sufficient accommodation for undergraduates in all universities, and to enhance skills such as Information Communication Technology (ICT) and English for Communication for University students.

These committees are chaired by Prof. Senaka Bandaranaike (Committee on Accommodation) and Prof. S.R.H. Hoole (IT and English Communication - Skills enhancement).

Both are members of the University Grants Commission. The Committees are expected to make their recommendations to the Secretary before May 15.
