EDB, NGJA to play key role at USA Jewellery show

by Irangika Range

The Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) and the National Gem and Jewellery Authority (NGJA) will play a key role at the Jewellery Circular Keystone Show (JCK) which will be held in Las Vegas, USA from June 4 to 8. The Sri Lankan Embassy in Washington would also extend a helping hand for the event.

Several leading local gem and jewellery manufacturers and exporters will participate in this event.

JCK is the premier jewellery trade fair held annually in the USA to showcase new products, designs and the latest technology. Sri Lanka's jewellery and gem industry could reap benefits by way of finding new markets and partners and gain in technology.

This would yield better foreign exchange earnings specially for the small and medium sector industrialists. An official said the EDB has been organising the Sri Lankan Pavilion at the show since 1999 and local participants comprised ten gem and jewellery exporters who have found orders amounting to around Rs. 700 million last year. "USA is the largest buyer of gems from Sri Lanka and they import precious stones worth approximately US$.25 million annually.

The total exports of gems and jewellery to USA was Rs.3,354 million in 2002 and Rs.3,066 million in 2003 up to October," he said.

"It is important to participate in JCK 2004 because USA is the number one jewellery and gem market in the world. Sri Lankan participants can gain more benefits such as strengthen present business links, build new trade links identify new developments in the market and obtain first hand information on importers, consumers, consumer preferences and market trends," he said.

Nine local companies, A. M. A. Careem Jewellers, Alankara (Pvt) Ltd, Khiard Jewellers, Engelo Gems, Bright Gems, Beauty Lanka Gems and Jewellery (Pvt) Ltd, D. B. Enterprise (Pvt) Ltd, Super Shine Gems and Deepthi Jewellery are expected to exhibit a range from Platinum, gold and silver jewellery, designer jewellery, loose diamonds, coloured gemstones, watches and other related products and services.
