Army-manufactured APVs delivered to STF Five locally manufactured Armoured Personnel Vehicles (APV), popularly known as buffels, were delivered to the Special Task Force of the Sri Lanka Police at the Army Headquarters yesterday morning, states a Defence Ministry release. These new APVs, identical to the original buffels imported from South Africa, are worth about Rs. 3 million each and were manufactured by the Army's Regiment of Sri Lanka Electrical & Mechanical Engineers (SLEME). These buffels are bullet proof against small arms fire. They are also protected against land mines and fitted with a powerful gun mount. All these vehicles, equipped with an efficient communication system between the driver and troops at the rear, are to join the STF fleet now in use in the North and East. These vehicles were handed over to STF Commandant DIG Nimal Lewke by Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army, Lt. Gen. L. P. Balagalle at this ceremony attended by Army and STF officials. |
