Court of Appeal issues notice by Wasantha Ramanayake The Court of Appeal yesterday issued notice on the Elections Commissioner and the General Secretaries of UNFA, UNF, Ilankal Tamil Arasu Katchi, Jathika Hela Urumaya and the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress in writ application seeking to prohibit the Elections Commissioner from appointing persons outside the list as National list MPs. The Bench comprised Justices Andrew Somawansa and S.I. Imam. Petitioner Rohan Edirisinghe cited the Elections Commissioner, the General Secretaries of UNFA, UNF, Ilankal Tamil Arasu Katchi, Jathika Hela Urumaya and the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, Ratnasiri Wickramanayake, Anuruddha Ratwatte, and the Attorney-General as respondents. The petitioner stated that parties should submit their National Lists to the Elections Commissioner enabling him to Gazette them. He stated that appointing persons outside the National Lists as National List MPs would be illegal. M. A. Sumanthiran with Viran Corea appeared for the petitioner. The notice returnable on June 17. |
