Colombo University and Association of HR professionals link to coach undergrads

A link between the Association of Human Resources Professionals (AHRP) and the Faculty of Science, University of Colombo has been forged.

Final year undergraduates of the faculty will be coached by professionals in the many areas in which they lack of skills and finally obtain a mock interview with a panel of HR professionals to obtain a report of their performance.

Each student could then gauge and assess his competencies at this interview and also get to know his or her weak areas to improve upon.

Known as "The Business Competencies and Interview Program", is one of the main highlights of a comprehensive series of modules that AHRP brings to the main general degree curriculums of the Faculty of Science. This is unique as for the first time such modules are part of the main curriculum rather than being additional courses, a press release said.

A Memorandum of Understanding setting out the nature and extent of the collaboration between AHRP and the Faculty of Science of the University of Colombo was signed on March 23 at the KG Hall of the University as part of the ceremony inaugurating the program.

President AHRP Rohan Pandithakoralage signed on its behalf while Prof. Ravi Wiejsundera, Dean, Faculty of Science signed on behalf of the Faculty. Vice Chancellor Professor Tilak Hettiarachchi was the chief guest. Dr. Kirthi Premadasa, the Head of the Department of Mathematics conceived the idea to have such a program and link the Faculty with AHRP.

AHRP grew out of a need among HR professionals to network among themselves, update their knowledge and to have the HR function recognised in the same way that other professions have gained recognition and acceptance by businesses in Sri Lanka.

In the four years of its existence, AHRP has mooted the idea of National HR awards to focus attention on the need to have good HR policies and practices.

The first such awards were made in 2002 when AHRP with the Postgraduate Institute of Management (PIM) and the Institute of Personnel Management (IPM) generated much awareness and made businesses realise the potential contribution true HR could make to the success of any organisation. AHRP also adds value to its members by various activities to enhance their professionalism and skills.

Recently the prestigious IPMA-HR granted AHRP, chapter status in Sri Lanka.

AHRP joins with the Science Faculty of the University of Colombo in its commitment to serve the community and especially undergraduates, the release said.
