20 dead, hundreds injured as storms hit Bangladesh

DHAKA, Thursday (AFP) At least 20 people were killed and 600 others were injured Wednesday when violent storms tore through two Bangladeshi districts on Bengali New Year's Day, police told AFP.

The storms ripped up trees and damaged homes in the northern districts of Mymensingh and Netrokona, local police said by telephone.

"The storm hit late in the evening today and primary reports suggest that at least 10 people were killed and 500 others were injured," said Mohammad Habibul Rahman, a policeman in Netrokona district, 128 kilometres (80 miles) north of here.

"The wind uprooted trees and hurled people yards away as well as causing heavy damage to mostly tin-made homes," he said.
