Former Sikh militants revive call for separate homeland AMRITSAR, India, Thursday (AFP) Former Sikh militants called for a separate homeland for the community, a demand that led to a bloody insurgency in India in the 1980s, but said this time they would campaign peacefully. "Our ultimate aim is to achieve the goal of creating Khalistan - a separate Sikh nation - where the Sikhs can heave the sigh of relief," Jaspal Singh Dhillon, a former militant acquitted of all charges, told a news conference. "We do not favour raising guns against the government of India but we will build a worldwide public opinion and our members will convince Sikhs to come on a single platform. Everything would be done democratically," he said. Dhillon and other former militants cleared of charges stemming from the insurgency said they were forming a political party called Shiromani Khalsa Dal to press their separatist demands. "We have received the support of hundreds of Sikhs living in England, the United States, Germany and various other countries," he said. |
