Army-LTTE agree to uphold ceasefire A meeting was held between GOC Brigadier Vajira Wijeyagoonewardena, Sri Lanka Army 23 Division, and Colonel Thambirajah Ramesh, Special Commander, Batticaloa and Ampara district and their delegations yesterday. The meeting was held in the Divisional Secretariat of Vavunathivu on yesterday at 2 p.m. It was chaired by Head of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission, Major General Trond Furuhovde, the Army and LTTE said in a join statement yesterday issued by the SLMM spokesman from Vavunathivu, Batticaloa. The main topic was the restoration of relations between the Sri Lanka Army and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in the Batticaloa and Ampara districts. The meeting was conducted in a cordial and pleasant atmosphere, GOC Brigadier Wijeyagoonewardena, and Col. Ramesh, agreed to meet regularly in the future in addition to agreeing on other topics related to the Ceasefire Agreement. Both parties agreed to continue to uphold and respect the Ceasefire Agreement entered between the Government of Sri Lanka and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam on February 22, 2002. The delegation from the Sri Lanka Army consisted GOC Brigadier Wijeyagoonewardena, Sri Lanka Army 23 Division, Colonel Laksiri Amaratunga, 233 Brigade, Batticaloa. The LTTE delegation consisted Col. Ramesh, Special Commander, Batticaloa and Ampara, Ram, Deputy Special Commander, Batticaloa and Ampara District, Howsalyan, Head of Political Wing, Batticaloa and Ampara District, Bavan, Liaison Officer, LTTE Peace Secretariat, Kilinochchi, S. Nagesh, K. Ramanan, and V. Jeyatthan. The SLMM delegation consisted Head of SLMM, Head of SLMM District Office Batticaloa, Preben Rasmussen and other officials. |
