Aspirations of the voters should never be suppressed - S. Subairdeen

The gladsome luminescence of the sun cannot be taken away even if the whole concourse of the humanity shield it from shedding its light on the universe. Likewise, the unceasing waves of the ocean would not stop lashing under any circumstances or under the decree and injunction of anyone else.

Such an analogy is comparable to the decisive victory of the United People's Freedom Alliance at the last general election which establishes ceaseless faith and the mandate of the people in the ability and strength of the alliance, to take the country forward.

No one can deny or gainsay the unshakable mandate shown by the people for the UPFA throughout the length and breadth of our country, states Ashraff Congress Leader, S. Subairdeen in a press release yesterday.

It is for the first time in the history of our franchise that a majority of 700,000 or more of the voters have quite clearly declared their preferences for the alliance. 14 out of 22 districts have been won by the Alliance.

In the same way the Alliance has secured 106 seats out of the existing 160. This could be considered equivalent to securing 2/3 majority of the voters.

However, we unfortunately note that the inadequacy of the proportionate representation has given rise to some difficulties in mustering enough seats in parliament to display a majority.

In an unlikely event of the alliance not mustering enough seats to display a majority, it would only reflect on the deficiency of a system which has posed a challenge, notwithstanding the commanding mandate of the people.

In the circumstances, there is a duty cast up on the newly formed parties such as Jathika Hela Urumaya to rise above the differences and consolidate with the mandate of the people by extending its hand of friendship and assistance with a view to engendering a just society and taking the country on the road to prosperity.

At a time such as this, where the Muslim community of Sri Lanka has affirmed their support and faith in the ability of the alliance, the Ashraff Congress too shares the verdict of the community and would take all steps in the future to advance the cause of the Muslim community in the manner in which they had expressed their franchises.

It is an undeniable fact that, this is the first time where the Muslims in the North East as well as in other parts of the country have convincingly expressed their mandate for UPFA and the victory would not have been possible, if not for the affirmative votes cast by the Muslims on an islandwide scale.
