News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Postal voting for Wayamba PC poll today by Manjula Fernando Postal balloting for the Wayamba (North Western) Provincial Council election will be held today and on Monday. In addition to the two official dates designated, the Elections Secretariat has made arrangements to accept postal ballots up to April 24 to cater to unforseen situations, Deputy Elections Commissioner K. Senanayake said. Public servants and servicemen unable to cast their postal votes on April 16 and 19 can do so from April 20 to 23 provided that their votes will reach its destination before 4.00 pm on April 24, prior to the closure of ballot boxes by the respective returning officers. The postal votes can also be hand delivered on the day of the election, April 24, Deputy Commissioner said. Over 11 political parties and one independent group will be contesting for the Kurunegala district while nine political parties and six independent groups will contest from Puttalam district to elect 50 members for the Wayamba provincial council. Three Muslim parties, Sri Lanka Muslim Kachchi, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress and Eksath Muslim Janatha Sanvidanaya are contesting the Wayamba elections with all the main political parties. According to the Elections Secretariat, there are 1,089,482 registered voters including 24,276 postal voters, in the Kurunegala district and 450,057 registered voters with an additional 5,174 postal voters, in the Puttalam district. |
