Callous ticket checkers abuse train commuter falsely

by Wasantha Ramanayake

A train commuter recently complained to the Fort Police about the unwarranted behaviour of some Railway Security Officers who had abused and ridiculed him in front of the passengers on the Senkadagala Menike express train bound for Kandy.

According to the statement made to the Police, the complainant who was a regular passenger on this train was compelled to purchase a second class ticket to the Ihala Kotte station since he was informed by the ticketing officers at the counter that second class tickets to his destination, Kadigamuwa was not available.

He had boarded the train and occupied a seat in one of the second class compartments.

Two Railway Security Officers who were checking the tickets, informed him that his ticket was not a valid one, since it bore the date stamp of the previous day.

He protested and insisted that it was bought from the counter a little while earlier and requested them to check with the counter.

However, the security officers accosted him and called him a thief had led him to the Security Office. The counter officer at the counter where the ticket was issued had confirmed to the two woman security officers who went to ascertain the validity of the ticket that the ticket had been issued by him and had even corrected the date with a pen.

The passenger complained that the unwarranted behaviour of the security officers held him to contempt and ridicule among the passengers, many of whom were regular travellers.

He questioned as to what right the Security officers had to verbally abuse him and call him a thief in the presence of the passengers, prior to ascertaining the validity of his ticket.

He also alleged that the counter officer who had issued him the ticket would have issued all the tickets issued from that counter bearing the date stamp of the previous day or the officer had intentionally done so to put him into trouble.
