Minister of Environment and Natural Resources A. H. M. Fowzie has directed the Central Environmental Authority to take immediate legal action against an aluminium and steel products manufacturing industry at Ihala Yagoda in the Gampaha District, which is reported to have violated the Environmental Law causing serious environmental destruction, states a press release issued by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources. This industry which is engaged in the manufacture of aluminium and stainless products has been causing environmental damage and pollution by emitting noise and noxious fumes exceeding the prescribed levels and by discharging the waste water. This industry has failed to comply with the environmental standard for a long period since 2001. The Central Environmental Authority has been giving them repeated instructions to construct waste water treatment system, and to adopt emission control system and to bring down the noise level to the standard. The industry, however, has been not responding positively to these instructions and have been carrying on the activities without even renewing their environment protection licence. The Minister having learnt about this damage caused to the environment instructed Central Environmental Authority to take immediate action under the law and to stop this unauthorized activities, if necessary even by suspending the above industry. |
